Customer Stories: The Laboratori Nazionali del Sud
New Central Ring of the yoke of the Superconducting Cyclotron
The Laboratori Nazionali del Sud is one of the four national laboratories of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics in Italy. As part of a €20.000.000 Project aimed at the renewal and enhancement of the entire research infrastructure, a new Central Ring of the yoke of the Superconducting Cyclotron is being build.
Established in 1976, the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) currently host around 150 people, including researchers, technologists, technicians, administrators, graduate students, undergraduates, and scholarship holders. Research activities are mainly oriented towards Nuclear Physics and Nuclear Astrophysics and Particle Astrophysics. The LNS laboratories also constitute an advanced pole of technology and instrumentation development.
The LNS is equipped with two accelerators, a Van de Graaff Tandem with maximum terminal voltage of 15 MV, and a K800 Superconducting Cyclotron. The tandem is in operation since 1982, the cyclotron since 1995. The beams produced by the two accelerators are sent to the various experimental rooms, which are equipped with complex detection systems, reaction chambers, vacuum systems and all the equipment necessary for the study of nuclear collisions. The experimental equipment installed is different according to the characteristics of the reactions to be studied, the type of reaction products, the number of particles emitted, etc.
The Laboratori Nazionali del Sud has granted AK Steel International the order to deliver 6 slabs of ARMCO® Pure Iron AME product. They are using this product in the upgrade of their research infrastructure. More specifically, the 6 slabs of ARMCO® Pure Iron, suitable for magnetic purposes, will be used to build the new Central Ring of the yoke of the Superconducting Cyclotron.
AK Steel International markets specialty steel products such as ARMCO® Pure Iron, stainless steel, metal products and composite auxiliary materials for the aerospace, automotive and industrial sectors.
